Meditation – A path of peaceful change

One of the things I love the most about getting away from our normal routine and heading to the beach is being able to do a few visits to the A.R.E and its meditation room. This is an annual trip and without fail since I was two, my mother and I have always made time during our vacation to meditate together. This place and my mother’s dedication to teaching me to meditate helped me navigate through childhood trauma, teen angst and allowed me to find my path faster than could have been possible, or even possible at all.

Since my early teens, I’ve always been able to go deep into the dark and quiet of my mind.It can be a short meditation of only a few minutes, to longer one lasting hours.

There are a variety of ways to meditate or drop yourself into a completely relaxed state. As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I do this with my clients/students all the time. For myself, I use a combination of techniques.

Usually, I start with sitting cross-legged with either a wall or something solid behind my back. My hands are on my knees, palms down. I tend to take most of my jewelry off lately as well. I focus first on my breathing, slow and steady, breathing in and up, out and down – pulling my navel into my spine, expanding my lungs and then reverse. Then for a few cycles, I’ll add in repeating a mantra in my head – I recommend you select your own. I use “I am Light, I am Love, I am Peace, I am Happiness.” Then, I slowly relax all the muscles in my body starting at my head and working down to my toes, followed by counting down from 10 to 0. This might take me all of five minutes to reach a relaxed space. Usually, it’s nice and quiet in the void.

But lately, I’ve been reading quite a bit about dreams, astral projection, lucid dreaming and more. And the last few meditations, I’ve noticed something interesting….when I close my eyes, it’s no longer dark and quiet. Instead, I have had hazy images swimming across my ‘vision’. At first, they were black and white, light playing against a dark canvas. It’s been that way for a few weeks. I figured it was just the daylight playing against my eyelids.

Today, I was greeted with full blown color, hazy at first, then the images started to sharpen and take on real form and shape. I snapped abruptly back into myself before it crystallized. My eyes snapped open, yet my body stayed in that relaxed state for a few more minutes.

It was a little surreal for a moment or two. Is anyone else have similar (or had) similar experiences with their meditations?

It might have freaked me out a little except for all the reading on lucid dreaming I’ve been doing. This is apparently normal and to be expected. I am just amazed at the images that unfolded….and, I can’t wait to see what comes up the next meditation.
